Floodplain Forest Restoration as a Nature-Based Solution to Create Climate-Resilient Communities in European Lowland Estuaries

چکیده

Anthropogenic impact has largely altered the estuarine environment. Today, Nature-based solutions (NbS) are required to respond challenges such as flooding that affect both human population and ecosystems. Estuarine ecosystems saltmarshes floodplain forests provide valuable services, wetland restoration for flood control is suggested. Recently, flow velocities attenuating effects of juvenile willows wave attenuation through White willow trees under extreme conditions have been found. Services in seemed promising. However, large woods do not bend may cause turbulence. On contrary, complex flexible woody vegetation bends response currents reduces velocities, thereby inducing lower turbulence, but knowledge diversity structure tidal (TWFF) lacking. Thus, first, an observational study on occurrence TWFF European estuaries along North Sea was carried out. Based findings aerial images, only small fragments were confirmed field Elbe, Ems, Dutch delta, Scheldt estuary. these analyses management plans, planned, implemented, studied, including a long-term at Elbe estuary upstream stretch. The results efforts provided, (2012–2022) restored estuary, which could serve pilot adapting communities climate change via NbS.

Forest Development, Wood Jams, and Restoration of Floodplain Rivers in the Puget Lowland, Washington

Historically in Puget Lowland rivers, wood jams were integral to maintaining an anastomosing channel pattern and a dynamic channel–floodplain connection; they also created deep pools. In the late 1800s, wood was removed from most rivers, rivers were isolated from their floodplains, and riparian forests were cut down, limiting wood recruitment. An exception to this history is an 11-km-long reach...

Understory vegetation as an indicator for floodplain forest restoration in the Mississippi River Alluvial Valley, U.S.A

In the Mississippi River Alluvial Valley (MAV), complete alteration of river-floodplain hydrology allowed for widespread conversion of forested bottomlands to intensive agriculture, resulting in nearly 80% forest loss. Governmental programs have attempted to restore forest habitat and functions within this altered landscape by the methods of tree planting (afforestation) and local hydrologic en...

Climate and soil drive forest structure in Bolivian lowland forests

Climate is one of the most important factors determining variation in forest structure, but whether soils have independent effects is less clear. We evaluate how climate and soil independently affect forest structure, using 89 200 stems ≥ 10 cm dbh from 220 1-ha permanent plots distributed along environmental gradients in lowland Bolivia. Fifteen forest structural variables, related to vertical...

Thermokarst rates intensify due to climate change and forest fragmentation in an Alaskan boreal forest lowland.

Lowland boreal forest ecosystems in Alaska are dominated by wetlands comprised of a complex mosaic of fens, collapse-scar bogs, low shrub/scrub, and forests growing on elevated ice-rich permafrost soils. Thermokarst has affected the lowlands of the Tanana Flats in central Alaska for centuries, as thawing permafrost collapses forests that transition to wetlands. Located within the discontinuous ...
